 Children at Midlothian Friends Meeting

Children at Midlothian Friends Meeting

Religious education for our youth is an important value in Midlothian Friends Meeting. The Quaker testimonies of equality brushes through our relationships with our children. For example, it is perfectly normal for a child to call another adult besides their parent by the adult's first name. In Quakerism's early days in England, it sometimes fell to the children of meeting to keep a meeting functional, because their parents were in jail because of religious persecution.

Religious Education for Children

RE classes are held every Sunday. At quarter past the hour, the children leave the Meeting for Worship and go to their classrooms for a 45 minute period.

For children of elementary school age or older, religious education classes are broken down by grade levels, depending on the needs of meeting and the number of children at each level.

Nursery care is available by calling ahead.

For children of elementary school age or older, religious education classes are broken down by grade levels, depending on the needs of meeting and the number of children at each level.

* Lower elementary is from grades kindergarten through 2nd or 3rd grade.
* Upper elementary is from grades 4 through 5 or 6.
* Junior young friends are middle school age
* Young friends are high school age

These are flexible classifications, and are adjusted each year. A coordinator is responsible for each grade level, and works with volunteers within meeting to provide age-specific lessons. If there are not enough children for a specific age group, age groups may be combined.

In good weather, the children enjoy the outdoor surroundings of our new meetinghouse in the woods, including visits to nearby llamas.
